Stephen Graham Jones has once again managed to captivate his readers with another outstanding slasher story. Don’t Fear the Reaper is a page-turning sequel to My Heart Is a Chainsaw, and it takes the reader on a thrilling and chilling ride.
Don’t Fear the Reaper is a heart-pumping and intense book with a slasher film feel. The narrative is set in small-town Proofrock, Idaho, where Jade Daniels, our protagonist, is released from prison right before Christmas after her conviction is overturned. However, her release takes a dangerous turn when Dark Mill South, a convicted Indigenous serial killer, begins his revenge killings in the town on the same day.
Stephen Graham Jones’ writing style is an art form in itself. It is completely unique and distinct from any other authors out there. His prose flows quickly and effectively, and it will keep you on the edge of your seat from the very beginning. The first scenes are a particularly heart-pounding moments.
One of the most remarkable things about this book is its pacing. While it took a bit for My Heart is a Chainsaw to get moving, Stephen Graham Jones gets the gore going early in Don’t Fear the Reaper. The author delivers punches that will keep readers turning pages. One cannot help but become invested in the characters, and the desire to see them survive and, hopefully, get revenge.
Stephen Graham Jones is an exceptionally talented writer, and Don’t Fear the Reaper showcases this skill. This latest addition to the Indian Lake Trilogy is a must-read for SGJ fans. The pacing is quick, the writing style is engaging, and the characters are compelling. The book successfully blends elements of the old style slasher films with Jones’ unique approach to storytelling. Like it’s predecessor, Don’t Fear the Reaper is a book that will stick with you long after you’ve turned the final page.
