The ridiculously wealthy Scrooge McDuck is the most famous resident of Duckburg-but his fortune goes far beyond mere currency. To his young nephews, “Unca” Scrooge is rich in something even more important than money stories!
Whether it’s the saga of how he dug his first million out of the Klondike, or the many times he saved his lucky Number One Dime from the clutches of Magica De Spell, the feisty tycoon is a font of mesmerizing tales and Huey, Dewey, and Louie can’t get enough! But even as they pester their Uncle to share more yarns of his legendary quests and globetrotting treasure hunts, the three boys are about to learn that the most valuable item Scrooge McDuck owns isn’t locked up in his absurdly capacious Money Bin -it’s the lifetime of wisdom he’s got stockpiled inside his head!
Brandon Montclare‘s writing captures everything fans loved about the original animated series—the humor, the heartwarming family dynamics, and most importantly, the exhilarating sense of adventure. The debut issue tells a story flowing throughout while giving us a sense of adventure with two tales from the mind of Uncle Scrooge to bring us back to our love of the original series. Montclare’s portrayal of Scrooge’s nephews—Huey, Dewey, and Louie—is nothing short of charming.
Tommaso Ronda‘s illustrations are undoubtedly one of the standout features DuckTales #1. With a reminiscent yet distinct from the original animation series, Ronda captures the spirit of that helped define the DuckTales for generations while keeping it fresh. There’s a delightful balance between staying true to familiar visuals and introducing their own artistic flair that enhances the storytelling and bringing it to our modern generation. Particularly notable is how Ronda uses varying techniques to delineate between the current story and adventurous flashbacks.
Newcomers diving into a DuckTales story for perhaps their first taste get quite an introduction. Montclare ensures accessibility to the series by crafting tales filled with both standalone adventures as well as arcs hinting at deeper lore developed over time. The creative team builds a series that will give new readers something to sink their teeth into while also keeping us longtime fans happy with nods to the original animated series.
DuckTales #1 is truly a comic book for all ages. The tales are light enough to keep those young ones happy while giving enough depth to allow the older generation to get a bit more out of the comic. Montclare and Ronda, along with the other creatives behind the scenes, have really outdone themselves brining the classic animated series to comics without taking away from our childhood. The future of DuckTales at Dynamite Entertainment is bright and we are here for it!
