I am always down for a good heist story, typically these stories come in the form of a feature film or novel. However, I’ll never this type of tale pass me by when it comes to comics. Everyone Loves a Jewel Thief is just that story, a clever heist tale crafted by writer Tim Seeley and artist/writer Aaron Campbell.
Novelist C. Scott Frederiksson hasn’t written anything of note in years. He’s about to lose his adjunct position at the University, be dropped by his agent, and possibly dumped if he doesn’t publish a hit and soon.
Scott has it all figured out. A masterfully scripted spectacle to dazzle the masses without doing any real harm. A local celebrity will be robbed of her prized possessions, and Scott will come out on the other side as an antihero, showered with publicity and a lucrative new book deal.
But he can’t do it alone. Every compelling heist needs a crack team of like-minded crooks, and Scott’s top recruits are his old high school D&D group and their ragtag townie friends coming in clutch with the getaway Geo Storm.
Now, Seeley might be one of the busiest people in comics these days and as a big fan of his, it can be daunting to try and jump into everything he is attached to. I will however say that Everyone Loves a Jewel Thief is one that you should not miss. This isn’t your ordinary heist story, it’s one that really feels unique and has a secondary story being told that makes the primary objective feel more involved.
The format of telling this story in both the past and present made for a more interesting experience. Starting off with the police investigation with then sending us back to the initial plan and execution to see how we got to where we are. It’s not groundbreaking but made this story work so much better. I was hooked from the start.
The many characters involved give off the feeling that we will absolutely love some and maybe love to hate others. Like most heist stories, each comes to the table with their own skill and each with their own knowledge of the motivations behind the heist in the first place. One that is clever and unique to Everyone Loves a Jewel Thief.
Campbell brings an amazing style of illustration to the table, in addition to his co-writing duties. It’s an almost gritty style that adds depth to the story. Stealing a jewel from a local celebrity almost seems like a more polished style would be present, but Campbell’s artwork gives the story the edge and uniqueness that is needed.
Everyone Loves a Jewel Thief is another example of the wide variety of amazing comics we are getting from Ignition Press. Tim Seeley and Aaron Campbell shine in this clever, unique, and visually stunning heist story that had me gripped from the start. Things are just getting started and I am looking forward to more.
Everyone Loves a Jewel Thief #1 hits local comic shops on April 8, 2026 from Ignition Press.
