The adaptation of a video game to big or small screen has only worked a handful of times and Fallout fiercely falls into this category after its debut season premiered on Amazon Prime this April.
Fallout is the story of haves and have-nots in a world in which there’s almost nothing left to have. Two-hundred years after the apocalypse, the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters are forced to return to the irradiated hellscape their ancestors left behind—and are shocked to discover an incredibly complex, gleefully weird, and highly violent universe waiting for them.
In most television adaptations of video games the creators of the latter tend to try and put too much of their own spin on the original content that deviates from the things that made the video game so amazing. Fallout is not one of these adaptations. The story gives those who are fans of the original medium well placed nods and easter eggs while still being able to invite new viewers and fans to the series.
The characters are captivating with each one having a unique story, point-of-view, motivations, flaws and strengths. The character growth and budding relationships give heart to a post-apocalyptic and terrifying world. Moments of who is telling the truth, who can you trust and who can help each other gives us enough mystery and intrigue to see where the relationships head.
Fallout does not shy away from violence and gore, that’s for sure. The first season is gritty and gruesome as a harsh world would be after the events that lead into the first season. The raw intensity of the season balances out the heart we mentioned prior and gives the series a realistic feeling.
While we know why the characters in Fallout are in the situation they are in 200 years after the end of civilization, there are still enough mysteries to wonder the hell is going on and keep you glued episode after episode. The twists and turns keep the plot engaging and unpredictable.
The look-and-feel of the Fallout TV series is spot-on with its video game counterpart. This gives fans of the video game a great feeling, but also does not distract newcomers from a truly outstanding series. If you have never even heard of the video game you have the ability to enjoy this series.
While we still believe The Last of Us is the best video game adaptation to hit screens in many years, if not all-time, but Fallout comes in a close second with a stellar debut season. Great characters, outstanding plot and story and fun visuals makes Fallout a must-watch tv series for all!
All episodes of the first season of Fallout are now streaming on Amazon Prime.
