Review Overview

Rob Guillory is a master of telling unique stories in the comic book comic book format and this goes no different for Farmhand where he takes on the writing and illustration tasks of the creator-owned book.

Jedidiah Jenkins is a simple farmer. But his cash crop isn’t corn or soy. He grows fast-healing, highly-customizable human organs. For years, Jed’s organic transplants have brought healing to many, but deep in the soil of the Jenkins Family Farm something sinister has taken root. Today this dark seed will begin to sprout, and the Jenkins family will be the first to taste its bitter fruit.

When we look for a new comic we focus on something unique and Farmhand is just that. Rob Guillory tackles an original story with outstanding storytelling and artwork. Guillory expertly balances the humor, horror and seriousness throughout the series to keep us engaged. The characters are super relatable as he draws us in with their struggles and triumphs.

Guillory has a knack for some pretty stellar artwork. His unique style brings the world of this comic to life with wacky-goriness. He captures the unique horror tale with over the top expressions make each panel jump of the page. There is something special about a comic that is written and illustrated by the same person and when they do both excellently we are all in for a great journey.

Fans of Chew, one of Guillory’s most successful works, will find plenty to love about Farmhand. The same blend of wackiness and gore plus dark humor is present throughout the series. Guillory talent for blending comedy, drama, thriller and mystery is unmatched and keeps us guessing as each page is turned.

Farmhand is a unique story from an outstanding comic creator. Rob Guillory gives us a truly original tale with the likes of Chew and takes us on a journey that is unlike anything on the shelves today. The artwork and story just right for this book and we cannot wait for more.

The collected edition of Farmhand Vol. 1 is available at bookstores everywhere from Image Comics.
