When word dropped of a new Gargoyles series coming to Dynamite Entertainment, memories came flowing back. The debut issue did not disappoint.
All-new ongoing series, in continuity with the epic Gargoyles television classic!
One thousand years ago, superstition and the sword ruled. It was a time of darkness. It was a world of fear. It was The Age of Gargoyles. Stone by day, Warriors by night, they were betrayed by the humans they had sworn to protect…frozen in stone by a magic spell for a thousand years. Now, here in Manhattan, the spell is broken, and they live again! They are Defenders of the Night! They are Gargoyles!
Series creator Greg Weisman and illustrator George Kambadais (Buckhead, Firefly) reintroduce the Manhattan Clan, a family of Gargoyles at full strength, though modern New York City is full of attractions and distractions, and each member of the clan has begun to go their own way. But their bonds will be tested, when nefarious factions from all across the world attempt to steal that rarest, most precious of possessions…an unhatched Gargoyle egg!
Gargoyles was one of our favorite childhood cartoons and when Disney+ premiere was one of the first nostalgic animation programs we popped on to remember the classic times. Now the Dynamite has released its first issue of the classic series we get even more to take in.
The story is classic Gargoyles and we love the connection to the television series and allowing the comic to be in continuity. However, the best part was seeing the creatures come to life once again. Kambadais did a wonderful job not falling into the trap of simply drawing the comic exactly the same as the animated series. He was able to differentiation the comic from the tv series enough, but also know they are connected.
In addition to the classic main cover, the Tony Fleecs and Trish Forstner variant cover brings the All Dogs Go To Heaven (and Stray Dogs) vibe to the series which was a must-purchase on December 7.
Of course none of this is a surprise as Weisman created the original animated series.
