Edenfrost takes readers on a harrowing journey with teenage siblings Alex and Yuli in war-torn Ukraine after they lose their parents in a pogrom. The mystical power of a Golem helps them navigate the chaos of the Russian Civil War while dealing with ethnic bias and national pride. Amit Tishler‘s writing, together with Bruno Frenda‘s illustrations and great colors and lines, make for a gripping story.
The Golem is a creature of Jewish folklore, and Edenfrost borrows this mythological trope to create a unique and interesting comic book. The Golem’s ability to protect its maker and the siblings’ use of it to survive the war makes for a great plot device. Moreover, the Golem is not shown as an all-powerful genie but rather as a creature that Alex and Yuli struggle to control. From the very start of the comic book, the Golem is an integral part of the narrative.
The creators of Edenfrost have done an great job in portraying the violent and disturbing aspects of the Russian Civil War. The siblings witness unspeakable carnage and atrocities as they move through Ukraine. They come across different factions with varying motives, ideologies, and prejudices. This mix of characters and events creates a sense of unpredictability that keeps the readers on the edge of their seats.
Although the story isn’t for every reader, it was well-structured and well-written. Tishler manages to develop the characters and their relationships well during an intense and action-packed story. Frenda’s illustrations are fantastic, and the colors used make the artwork even more captivating. The characters are expressive, and the action sequences are well-drawn. The comic book’s pacing is excellent, and the story moves along at a breakneck pace.
The inclusion of Jewish folklore, the Russian Civil War, and the use of a golem makes Edenfrost an excellent comic book that stands out from the crowd. It is an exciting and engaging read with a strong narrative and sharp artwork that should keep readers coming back for more.
