Here for the Cover, Stayed for the Story in Astronaut Down

Review Overview

As an artist I am always drawn to covers of comic books when I purchase my books on new comic book day. Astronaut Down was a must buy when seeing the cover of issue one.

The comic artist Rubine (Heroes: Vengeance, Search For Hu) is responsible for this wonderful cover and interior art with colors by Valentina Briški. The cover of first issue features a close up profile of astronauts helmet with the skull ghost separating out. Simple colors of black, white and purple.

Although the cover pushed me to get this book, James Patrick‘s (Kaiju Score, Green Arrow) impact as a writer kept me going.

There is a connection between the reader and the characters in the book. You feel for their trials and tribulations. Although the base plot of the world coming to an end and a small group of people are the only ones who can save it, there is something about Patrick’s writing, Rubine’s compelling art, and the quick but meaningful pace of the book that makes you want more.

Speaking of wanting more – the first issue ends in a cliffhanger which should lead to plenty of orders for the second issue of this AfterShock series. Hell, even if the story drops off a bit, if the covers stay outstanding, they will get my business.

Pick up Astronaut Down #1 at your local comic book shop or read online via ComiXology.
