Writer Adam Rose and artist Magenta King tell us a story of an unlikely partnership between a human and a giant with sizable detective skills in Huge Detective.
After a race of giants emerged from deep sleep beneath the earth, a bloody conflict ensued in what became known as The Omega Event. Eventually, a treaty is resolved and state of Brobdingnag is created, allowing humans and giants to co-exist harmoniously. Yet tragedy threatens to shatter the peace, and an unlikely partnership is formed between Detectives Tamaki and GYANT. As the pair attempt to stop the criminal at large, they find themselves involved in a mystery bigger than either could imagine.
After reading the solicitation for Huge Detective, I was not sure how why this pairing would come to be and how it would play out in the debut issue. However, Adam Rose does an excellent job setting up the plot and introducing us to the main characters. Rose builds a unique dynamic between Tamaki and GYANT that is intriguing and innovative. We get the beginning stages of the difficulty of navigating their differences in size and skill to work together towards a common goal. Rose keeps us engage and eager to unravel the mystery alongside the detectives
Magenta King’s incredible artwork is a great pairing with Rose’s narrative. King brings the world of humans and giants to life in a visually stunning way. Each panel is wonderfully illustrated allowing us to immerse ourselves in a unique world featuring giants and humans co-existing. The use of a different style of artwork in the in prologue versus the main story is a great way to differentiate between times.
I am always down for a crime detective story, but some can all seem the same. Huge Detective gives us a wonderful mystery but with a unique twist. Pairing these two up in a world where giants and humans co-exist, but don’t typically interact outside of travel, is a beautiful way of telling this story.
Huge Detective #1 is a great start to what seems to be a promising series. A unique story with great artwork makes for a standout debut issue. It’s an exciting blend of mystery, action, and fantasy that will leave you eager for more.
Huge Detective #1 hits local comic shops on August 21, 2024 from Titan Comics.
