Review Overview

Have you ever wanted to explore the unknown? James Tynion IV explores the “True Weird” in Blue Book #1, his first creator-owned release at Dark Horse Comics.

Written by Tynion IV (Something is Killing The Children, The Department of Truth, The Closet) and illustrated by Michael Avon Oeming (Powers, Thor), this comic book presents readers with an exciting retelling of some of the most popular UFO and alien abduction stories. This debut issue includes the infamous Betty and Barney Hill abduction—the widely publicized and very first abduction that went on to shape and influence all future encounter stories.

Tynion IV introduces what he calls his “True Weird” stories in Blue Book #1. These are tales of ordinary people encountering the strange and the impossible. His goal is to provide readers with a sense of mystery and wonder as he shares these extraordinary stories through the medium of comics. He also wants to challenge our preconceived notions about reality, encouraging us to think outside the box when it comes to possibilities beyond our own world.

Oeming’s artwork brings these tales to life. His art style is unique and captures both the fear and excitement that come with exploring something new – like extraterrestrial encounters! He uses a combination of soft lines, simple colors, and dynamic perspectives to bring each scene alive on paper, allowing readers to feel as if they are right there alongside Betty and Barney. Oeming’s illustrations truly bring this story to life in ways that words alone could never do justice.

Dark Horse Comics’ Blue Book #1 is an exciting exploration into some of history’s strangest UFO encounters. From mysterious abductions to eerie sightings, this comic book brings these tales from beyond our world into vivid detail for readers everywhere! With Tynion IV’s captivating narratives paired with Oeming’s beautiful illustrations, this debut issue is sure to capture your imagination as you embark on a journey full of mystery and adventure!

In addition to the main story, a backup short story entitled “True Weird: Coney Island” completes the debut issue featuring writing from Tynion IV and artwork from Klaus Janson with lettering from Aditya Bidikar.

Originally released digitally as part of Tynion IV’s Substack, Blue Book #1 hits local comic shops on February 22, 2023 in single-issue print format.
