They say it is best to not work with family. I would assume this would be even more important when protecting a city from kaiju. Well, it doesn’t seem possible in We Ride Titans.
Written by Tres Dean (Eternal Warrior: Scorched Earth) with illustrations by Sebastián Piriz (Census), colors by Dee Cunniffe, letters by Jim Campbell and designed by Tim Daniel, We Ride Titans is a five-issue miniseries published by Vault Comics in 2022. Now, the entire series is available in trade paperback.
Trying to keep your family from imploding is a tall order. Kit Hobbs is about to find out it’s an even taller order when that family has been piloting the Titan that protects New Hyperion from kaiju for generations. Between a spiraling brother, a powder keg of a father, and a whole bunch of twenty-story monsters, she’s got her work cut out for her.
Kaiju comics, books, or movies are not typically something I gravitate towards, besides the Pacific Rim films. This, along with the sheer number of comics, graphic novels, trade paperbacks, and novels stacked up in my office would normally make me skip taking in something along the lines of We Ride Titans. However, something called me in and it was well worth the read.
A mix of family drama, epic monster battles, future technology and politics gives We Ride Titans a deep and meaningful storyline which is easy to follow and flows perfectly through the five chapters.
Piriz’s illustrations is outstanding with amazing colors by Cunniffe. However, my favorite part of the artwork is the stellar work of Daniel. His beautiful logo, chapter design and over graphic design of the trade paperback is a huge selling point to a fellow graphic designer.
Things can’t all be perfect. My one negative critic would be the final chapter seemed a bit rushed. There are plenty of good series to go six-issues and this would be a great candidate. Split chapter five into two parts and the comic would be close to perfect in our books.
We Ride Titans: The Complete Series trade paperback is available on November 9, 2022 wherever comics are sold. What a perfect holiday gift for your friends and family…or even yourself.
