Kill All Immortals is a brutal story with just the right amount of gore. The action-packed debut is business mixed with vikings who have found a mysterious source of immortality. Written by Zack Kaplan with stunning artwork and colors from Fico Ossio and Thiago Rocha respectfully plus perfect lettering from the Eisner nominated Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, this debut is one of the best comics of 2024 by far.
A thousand years ago, Viking explorer Erik the Red and his four adult children discovered a mysterious source of immortality. Now, in our modern world, they are an enigmatic billionaire family with a powerful banking empire. But when Erik’s only daughter, Frey Asvald, seeks to finally be free from her family’s influence, she must be prepared to reveal their supernatural secrets and confront her well-trained siblings in a deadly and epic struggle for power.
The story, premise and narrative for Kill All Immortals is unique and wonderfully written, but the standout of this debut issue is the visuals presented by Fico Ossio and Thiago Rocha. Each panel somehow filled with movement and energy, making the action come alive on each page. The art team’s ability to make Kill All Immortals feel cinematic using static artwork is truly impressive, adding depth to the story from start to finish.
When looking for a new comic series to sink our teeth into, we look for something unique. What Kaplan and the team behind Kill All Immortals brings to the table is definitely something we don’t see very often, in terms of unique story and artwork. Kill All Immortals is a thought-provoking, action-packed and cutthroat mixture of immortality, business and family.
In the debut issue, the creative team has laid a foundation on this mysterious family. The characters are complex and intriguing. While the men of the family seem hell bent on business domination, Frey Asvald has a different motivation. Frey’s journey from self-discovery back to her home in Iceland is one that we cannot wait to see unfold in future issues.
Kill All Immortals will go down as our favorite debut issue of 2024 with the promise of being one of the best comics series of the year. What Zack Kaplan, Fico Ossio, Thiago Rocha and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou are able to do in 28-pages is simply stunning. A fresh take on immortality and power struggles that did not disappoint and has us eagerly awaiting more.
Kill All Immortals #1 hits local comic shops on July 10, 2024 (FOC: June 3) from Dark Horse.
