Review Overview

Get ready for a thrilling journey through rural America with Local Man Vol. 1. The Image Comics series revives the nostalgia of 1990s superhero stories with a rural crime noir twist. Written and illustrated by Tony Fleecs and Tim Seeley, Local Man strikes a perfect balance between classic superhero storytelling and a gripping rural noir narrative that will leave readers wanting more.

To begin with, the comic book follows Jack Xaver, an ex-superhero from the media-famous team Third Gen. After a controversy that shakes the superhero world, he finds himself living in his parents’ basement in rural America, struggling to find his place outside of the superhero life. The story takes a dark turn when a string of murders occur in his small town and Jack is pushed to solve the case, using his superhero expertise.

The most notable aspect of Local Man is how it pays homage to the 1990s era of superhero comics. The illustrations are dynamic, making readers feel like they are in the middle of the action scene. The smooth transition between scenes and art styles creates an immersive experience with a unique style that is familiar yet fresh.

The story has a unique structure that grabs the reader’s attention from the first chapter. Each issue finishes with a riveting cliffhanger, making readers want to know more about Jack’s past and his current predicament. The story arc nicely builds up to an explosive ending that leaves readers eagerly anticipating the next installment.

The characters are also well-crafted, each with a distinct personality that adds to the story’s depth. Local Man is, without a doubt, a thought-provoking piece that keeps readers interested in the superhero and noir genre.

Local Man Vol. 1 is a rural superhero story with a touch of noir is a unique combination that the creators have executed to perfection. The nostalgia-inducing comic series blends the best of classic superhero stories and detective fiction. The story arc ends on a high note, leaving readers craving for more. The outstanding artwork and gripping story make Local Man a standout series in the world of comics.

The Local Man Vol. 1 trade paperback hits local comic shops on September 27, 2023 and a day earlier on September 26 at bookstores everywhere.

Tony Fleecs joined the Capes and Tights Podcast to discuss Local Man and so much more on Episode 95. Co-creator Tim Seeley was also on the podcast for Episode 123, but to discuss his comic The Alternates with Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum.
