Not only did Marvel Studios announce a new release date for the upcoming The Fantastic Four film, but also announced casting of Marvel’s first family on Wednesday.
Pedro Pascal will portray Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic), along with Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm (Invisible Woman), Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm (Human Torch) and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm (The Thing) in the long awaited Marvel Cinematic Universe debut of The Fantastic Four.
Like most Marvel Studios news, other details are sparse and not much more is known. The characters in the comics created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby are astronauts who obtain superpowers after their spaceship was exposed to cosmic rays in space. Reed Richards gains the ability to stretch, Susan Storm can now turn invisible, Johnny Storm can turn his body into fire which also gives him the ability to fly, and Ben Grimm is now orange rock.
The most famous villain to the Fantastic Four in comics has been Victor von Doom (Doctor Doom). However, there has been no announcement on wether he will make an appearance and if so who will play the infamous villain.
In addition to casting the main four characters, Marvel Studios nailed down a new release date of July 25, 2025 and stated The Thunderbolts will now release on May 2, 2025. Matt Shakman of WandaVision fame will direct Fantastic Four, from a screenplay by Josh Friedman, Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer.
This is not the first attempt of an adaptation of the comics. In 1994, a feature film was filmed and mostly edited featuring the four superheroes, but was unreleased after it was deemed not up to snuff. Fox released two films in the early 2000’s that were not well received by fans as well. Most recently, Fox rebooted the film franchise in 2015 to even worse reviews. Following multiple unsuccessful adaptations Fox sold to Disney allowing Marvel to regain control over their characters and attempt a new film in 2025.
The Fantastic Four hits theaters on July 25, 2025.
