The Killer VHS series from Shortwave Publishing not only taps into our nostalgia for VHS tapes but also delivers exceptional horror stories and Alex Ebenstein‘s Melon Head Mayhem is no exception.
Cousins Carson and Sophia are in town for their grandma’s funeral and are, unknowingly, about to live out the nightmare that is every horror fan’s dream. They stumble upon an old unfamiliar VHS tape tucked away in grandma’s house, they figure the worst that can happen is a few cringeworthy moments and 90 minutes wasted. Instead, the video summons the movie monsters-local urban legends called melon heads-into their very real lives!
Reading these, now five, Killer VHS tales out of order is a testament to how good they are as both standalone stories and the interconnected VHS theme. However, I can understand why Shortwave kicked things off with Melon Head Mayhem as it fits the 1980s horror VHS flick so well. While the story is fantastic, the characters are extremely well-written and likable, someone you want to root for as they face off against terrifying Melon Heads.
Melon Head Mayhem has a strong 1980s horror vibe with a blend of modern storytelling to allow it to be easily digested in 2024 and beyond. The tale is fast-paced and easy to read. Ebenstein’s ability to transport me to a world filled with movie monsters and spine-chilling encounters is truly commendable and in such a short story.
Ebenstein shows off his love for this genre with a plot that is both thrilling and doesn’t take itself too serious. This makes the book a low stakes, enjoyable read to get us in the spooky mood. The story is simple, yet doesn’t take away from the impact; instead it adds to the overall charm of the book and series. Die-hard horror fans and newcomers to the genre can find something fun about Melon Head Mayhem.
Alex Ebenstein’s Melon Head Mayhem is a thrilling ride through the world of 1980s horror that was simply fun. Shortwave Publishing has nailed the adult version of R.L. Stine‘s Goosebumps with their Killer VHS series of novellas and Melon Head Mayhem‘s tale was just another outstanding addition to this series.
Killer VHS: Melon Head Mayhem is available at bookstores everywhere. Next up in the Killer VHS series is Cicada by Tanya Pell (September 24) and Candy Cain Kills Again: The Second Slaying by Brian McAuley (November 12).
