Review Overview

Monomyth is a story about the darkest side of stories…how they use people, twist people and affect people and the dangers of getting stuck telling the same tired tales.

Written by celebrated writer David Hazan (Nottingham), with art by Cecilia Lo Valvo (Grimm Tales from the Cave); colors by Marissa Louise (Stranger Things) and letters by DC Pride 2022 and GLAAD Award-nominated Lucas Gattoni (Killer Queens).

Monomyth takes place in a world where magic is all but extinct. The last ailing wizard casts his final spell, summoning descendants from ancient bloodlines to a school for magic that is now in disrepair. But these chosen ones are in for more than just learning spells; they have to confront their pasts and defeat each other in order to survive. As they face their fears, they must also grapple with the mysteries of this magical world.

The artwork is chaotic yet clean, dark yet engaging. The illustrations bring the story alive as readers get pulled deeper into the pages and further away from reality. With heavy shadows casted throughout the panels, readers can almost feel the darkness that lingers over this mysterious school for magic and its inhabitants. But it’s not all doom and gloom; flashes of bright colors help bring life back into this world while providing insight into some of its characters’ emotions such as fear or hope.

Monomyth #1 is an exciting journey into a realm full of secrets that begs to be explored further through its captivating artistry and thrilling plotline. If you are a fan of Nottingham at Mad Cave Studios, then you will be a fan of this comic which makes sense as it is coming from the same creator. Monomyth #1 hits shelves at your local comic shop on May 3, 2023.
