Namor is back and with Jason Aaron at the helm we are in for a character altering story that will set the tone for Namor for years to come. In Namor #1, Aaron along with artists Paul Davidson & Alex Lins set the stage and tone for the series that is gearing up to be an outstanding run.
War rages beneath the waves, from the lost cities of the Secret Seas to the fathomless depths where the Elder Whales reign. Seven kings, old and new, fight to rule the watery realm. But where is Namor, the once mighty Sub-Mariner? He’s sitting behind bars on the surface, with no intention of ever setting foot in the seas again. So begins an oversized Atlantean event that will forever reshape the landscape of the undersea world while at last laying bare the dark history of Atlantis and its fiercest, most infamous defender. An epic that will redefine the King of the Seas.
In the debut issue of Marvel’s new series, Jason Aaron sets up a compelling story that explores how much Namor has changed over the years and put in motion a comic series that will redefine the character for the long haul. Aaron’s iteration of Namor feels true to the essence of the character while still offering fresh and innovate insights into his motivations and struggles. The skillful storytelling of Aaron gives us a chance to see a Namor for new and old comic readers to enjoy.
Namor #1 is also fantastically illustrated by the duo of Paul Davidson & Alex Lins. Each artist took a different part of the timeline and skillfully brought the characters to life. Davidson’s rougher and grittier present-day illustrations contrast beautifully with Lins’ smoother depictions of a younger Namor, really showcasing both the character’s current struggles with the innocence of the past. These two differing styles made it easy for us to differentiate between past and present. Having two artists in this debut issue really made a great issue into an excellent issue.
As no surprise really, Namor #1 is an excellent comic book issue. Jason Aaron really knows how to take a character and truly redefine who this character is for the foreseeable future, as similar to Punisher. Namor solidifies the abilities of Jason Aaron as a storyteller and along with Davidson & Lins, give us a Namor we all hoped for and are excited to see where this journey goes from here.
Namor #1 hit local comic shops on July 17, 2024 from Marvel Comics.
