Review Overview

Fans of the Planet of the Apes franchise, rejoice! The beloved sci-fi franchise is back for a new era of apes with a return to Marvel Comics.

Eisner-winning writer David F. Walker and artist Dave Wachter have united forces to bring readers an epic story about an ALZ-113 virus that has spread across the planet, leading to a breakdown in human society as well as a fanatical group of humans determined to kill all apes.

Planet of the Apes #1 follows “Peacekeeper” Juliana Tobon, who is determined to stand against those who would take out their aggression on innocent apes. As they travel around locations and years around the world, readers get a glimpse into how widespread and destructive this virus has become and just how far some people will go to protect their own interests.

The artwork throughout this comic is unique – it’s a mix between what many expect from a Marvel comic and something much more independent. It’s clear that Wachter put a lot of thought into every page and it pays off for readers.

The writing in this issue is excellent; Walker does an incredible job jumping from location to location and time period to time period so readers can understand just how widespread this virus really is and why Juliana Tobon must take action now before it’s too late. He also manages to capture each character’s personality and emotion in such detail that readers will be able to feel what they’re going through right alongside them.

Planet of the Apes #1 is a great comic for those fans of the franchise. The debut issue dropped on April 5, 2023 with a second issue in the on-going series coming May 10.
