Paper Planes is a captivating young adult original graphic novel from Mad Cave Studios’ young adult imprint Maverick which soars high above the rest.
Written by Jennie Wood and illustrated by Dozerdraws with letters from the talented Micah Myers, Paper Planes will hit the shelves of your local comic shop June 27, 2023.
This story follows the journey of two former best friends, Dylan Render and Leighton Worthington, as they attempt to successfully navigate their way through a summer camp for troubled youth. If they can’t get good evaluations at the camp, they won’t be able to attend high school with their friends. As Dylan and Leighton participate in camp activities, chores, and reexamine the events that led up to the incident that sent them to camp, they must figure out how to balance their friendship while still trying to save it from being ruined.
What makes Paper Planes stand out from other young adult graphic novels is its incredible art style. Crisp lines are used for the main story while more rough lines on yellowed pages are used for the flashbacks. Dozerdraws uses this technique well to help readers easily decipher between past and present events without having to stop and think about it too much.
Wood’s storytelling in Paper Planes is also top-notch, as it reads just as easily as you would expect for a young adult graphic novel. The characters are engaging, likable, and easy to relate to—which makes it even easier for readers of all ages to connect with them on an emotional level.
One of the most unique aspects of Paper Planes is its use of paper planes at night in their cabin when Dylan and Leighton need to communicate with each other but don’t want anyone else catching wind of it.
All in all, Paper Planes is an excellent young adult graphic novel that will keep readers hooked until the very last page. Its crisp art style combined with its engaging characters make for an unforgettable experience!
