The Power Rangers have been gracing the pages of comics for many years, but BOOM! Studios is ushering in a new era in Power Rangers with Power Rangers Prime! This new series is a great introduction for new readers and a bold new direction for avid readers.
Angel Grove University students face a difficult choice after crossing paths with a fugitive straight out of legend. The consequences for hiding her are dire… but her existence may not stay a secret for long.
I was a big fan of the Power Rangers television series as a child who grew up in the 1980s and 1990s, but even as an avid comic book reader and collector I hadn’t cracked open a Power Rangers comic until reading this brave new series, Power Rangers Prime. This new tale is felt like a great place to jump on without feeling lost and it was just that.
The debut issue features the exhilarating action and adventure that fans of the Power Rangers have come to expect while giving those who have missed out on the long comic book run a great start. Talented writer Melissa Flores balances the tightrope between introducing a new Power Rangers line while also holding true to the history that has built the iconic name we have all come to know. This also goes for expertly balancing introducing new characters while respecting the legacy built over previous comic book, television and movie iterations.
It’s clear to me that Flores has a love for the Power Rangers and is pouring their heart and soul into Power Rangers Prime. The dialogue is crisp and engaging, revealing just enough about our cast of characters to make them relatable yet intriguing enough to want more revealed in future issues. Not to sound like a broken record but for those unfamiliar with past Power Rangers lore, fear not—this issue serves as an excellent starting point without overwhelming us with backstory.
Flores’ story would not be complete without the outstanding illustrations from Michael Yg. Their illustrations bring this new tale to life with action packed sequences and vivid imaging. The dynamic panels almost feel in motion although in a static image form. The striking colors by Fabi Marques add to the overall artwork and story. The art and story wouldn’t be as spectular without the lettering from Ed Dukeshire, which blends seamlessly into the pages to give pops when needed and stay hidden in the background when trying not to take away from the story being told.
Seasoned Power Rangers fans will enjoy this new series with delightful nods to iconic elements intertwined throughout this debut issue. Additionally, the creative team introduces a well-known group to this new Power Rangers series that could surprise even the biggest fans.
Power Rangers Prime ushers in a new era of Power Rangers comics with the skillful guidance of Melissa Flores, Michael YG, Fabi Marques and Ed Dukeshire. The new series gives longtime fans a new tale to sink their teeth into while also allowing new readers to jump into a Power Rangers story and not feel lost.
Power Rangers Prime #1 hits local comic shops on November 13, 2024 from BOOM! Studios.
