Review Overview

In the world of comics, there are few characters as iconic as Spawn. Created by Todd McFarlane, Spawn has been a staple in the comic book industry for decades with over 350 issues in the main series. Now, in Rat City, we get to see a new take on this beloved character. Written by Erica Schultz and illustrated by Ze Carlos, this series offers a fresh and exciting perspective on the Spawn Universe.

Peter Cairn is an ex-soldier and an amputee, he finds himself with newfound powers after being affected by Al Simmons’ necroplasmic detonation. The nanites in his prosthetic legs grant him abilities that set him apart from the rest of society. This unique twist on the traditional Spawn origin story sets the stage for an intriguing narrative that keeps readers hooked from start to finish.

Rat City sets itself apart from the regular Spawn storyline with its futuristic cyberpunk setting. The blending of sci-fi elements with the supernatural aspects of the Spawn Universe creates a visually stunning world that feels both familiar and fresh. Ze Carlos’ artwork brings this world to life with intricate details and dynamic layouts that draw readers into Peter Cairn’s journey.

Erica Schultz’s writing shines in this debut issue, introducing readers to a new voice within the Spawn Universe. Her storytelling is engaging and immersive, providing just enough information to keep readers intrigued while leaving plenty of room for future exploration. Schultz does an excellent job of balancing action-packed sequences with quieter moments that allow for character development and emotional depth.

Rat City is a must-read for fans of the Spawn Universe created by McFarlane. It offers a fresh take on the classic character, expanding the universe in exciting new ways. With stellar artwork by Ze Carlos and compelling writing by Erica Schultz, this issue sets the stage for what promises to be an epic series filled with twists and turns.

Rat City #1 hit local comic shops on April 10, 2024 from Image Comics.
