Detectives, blood, afterlife and more in Revolvers #1 which is a unique take on the traditional cop story.
The series is written by John Zuur Platten (St. Mercy) with illustrations by Christian Dibari (Rad Wraith), and colors by Simon Gough (Ringside, The Last Ronin). Revolvers #1 hit your local comic book shop on October 5 from Image Comics.
Hampton Wales, a Detroit homicide detective, finds himself trapped in a mysterious and violent reality, only to find himself dead while attempting to solve a seemingly average and routine homicide. Confronted by an immortal tormenter known as La Piton (the Python), Hampton begins a dark and twisted quest to find out why and how he died. To do so, he must face off against a legion of gun-toting, deceased Revolvers within the Moratorium, a hellish version of Puragatory. Hampton will need to “kill of be killed” to have enough time to unravel his demise and discover it was by his own hand, someone else, or something more sinister.
The detective story is not far from other stories we have all heard, but you add the fact that Wales is dead and that changes things. At least we hope moving forward.
Revolvers #1 was a bit of a miss in my book. The series has good enough artwork for the type of writing, but isn’t my favorite. The story is trying to setup a lot in the first pages of the issue one and tends to make me think the book being a four-part miniseries might prove to be too short to tell the entire story. Only time will tell.
I picked up this issue on October 5 on a hunch. I wasn’t too disappointed with the story, but after reading Dark Ride from Joshua Williamson (Batman, Nailbiter) it was definitely not nearly as good. I will give this issue another read prior to issue two dropping on November 9 at your LCS.
Overall, the story has promise and here’s to hoping things come together in the four-part comic book series.
Also, is it just me or does the cover remind you a lot of Rick Grimes?
