Ignition Press. Cullen Bunn. Okay, you got me. Bunn, along with artist Aneke, brings us into a dark and brutally intense world with Ripcord. A truly dark, unsettling ride that has me in its grasp with so much more to come.
The drug known as “Ripcord” has become the scourge of the world. It’s extremely addictive, and it doesn’t just alter your perception, it fundamentally alters who you are. Ripcord users have their whole bodies taken over by the substance, and it transforms them into mindless, frenzied killers who want nothing but to destroy. This makes every place the drug has grown popular dangerous.
Dillon is one of thousands who has lost a family member to Ripcord, but unlike so many others, she’s going to do something about it. Her sister has gone missing in the Outback, and Dillon is going to stop at nothing — and let nothing stop her — until she brings her home.
First off, Ignition Press has been killing it with their first few series since their launch in late-2025. The reintroduction to The Beauty, the amazing Murder Podcast, and not to mention No Place, Voyeur, Bunn’s Deluge, and more. Now, Bunn returns for another series with Ignition in Ripcord.
Bunn has been one of those writers that I cannot get enough of over the years. Whether it be his work at Marvel or his outstanding horror stories from the past few years, Bunn has had my attention. But as someone who tends to keep himself busy, it can be sometimes hard to read everything upon release from the writer. However, the plot for Ripcord had me enticed.
A drug that changes your perception, but also alters who you actually are made for a book worth reading, not to mention coming from the mind of Bunn. The premiere issue doesn’t dive too deep into the drug itself, it lays a nice solid foundation for what’s to come. The first issue is brutal and intense, something that came as no surprise. While this story may feature an extremely additive drug, it’s more of a human story itself, a dark one at that.
One of the things I love about this debut issue was that Bunn lets the stunning illustrations by Aneke breathe, leaving pages without text and allowing us as the reader to really take in the visuals. And while these illustrations are superb and are brutal as well, its the covers by Jorge Fornes that might catch your eye to start.
Ripcord is gearing up to be another stunning comic from Cullen Bunn and with the artwork by Aneke, the premiere issue is one worth grabbing. This darkly human story is brutal and it’s just getting started.
Ripcord #1 hits local comic shops on February 4, 2026 from Ignition Press.
