Review Overview

From the outset of RoboWolf, it’s clear that Jake Smith is a comic creator who not only loves his retro video games, comics, and action films, but also deeply appreciates that art of crafting a fun comic itself. Every single panel in RoboWolf‘s premiere issue bursts from the page with vibrant colors, a heavy dose of nostalgia, and a crazy sense of humor. It’s rare to read a comic where the characters and creators feel like they are having a good time.

RoboWolf and his crew of bank robbing criminals are in a race against time to get a fat stack of stolen money to the villainous Colonel Massacre, who has kidnapped RoboWolf’s daughter for ransom! The Colonel’s not the only one with an eye on the money, however, and our heroes will have to use their combined skills to tear through an onslaught of bloodthirsty cannibals, ninjas, robots, and more!

The action-packed premiere issue of RoboWolf is a heist-filed romp featuring a cyborg wolf-man armed to the teeth. Yes, you read that correctly. A cyborg wolf… with guns. Now if that doesn’t make you pickup a copy, I don’t know what will. This story instantly transported me back to childhood afternoons spent devouring old school Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Street Fighter, and even RoboCop.

Now Smith isn’t just the creative mind behind RoboWolf; he’s a one-man show. This four-issue miniseries, Smith takes on writing, illustrating, coloring, and even lettering duties. Some would have to think that juggling all these roles would suffer, but in this case, every element is fantastic. On top of a fantastic and fun story, the artwork is a truly breathtaking sight. The nostalgic feeling, vibrant colors, and action-packed panels makes for a visually striking comic.

When I first cracked open RoboWolf #1, I didn’t full know quite what to expect, but by the time I closed the first issue, I couldn’t figure out why I even hesitated in the first place. The first issue was a blast from start to finish, and you can feel the passion Smith has poured into every page. His talent shines in every single aspect of this comic and we are all better for it. A must-read comic of 2025.

RoboWolf #1 hits local comic shops on May 21, 2025 from Dark Horse.
