Salem’s Lot by Stephen King brings us back to the very second published book for the King of Horror. With Salem’s Lot, King solidified himself as a true master of horror story telling and he did so with a classic vampire story.
When two young boys venture into the woods, and only one returns alive, Mears begins to realize that something sinister is at work. In fact, his hometown is under siege from forces of darkness far beyond his imagination. And only he, with a small group of allies, can hope to contain the evil that is growing within the borders of this small New England town.
With this, his second novel, Stephen King established himself as an indisputable master of American horror, able to transform the old conceits of the genre into something fresh and all the more frightening for taking place in a familiar, idyllic locale.
You can tell King’s Salem’s Lot story was heavily influenced by vampire fiction like Bram Stoker’s Dracula as well as other horror stories and movies. The influence from both mediums is very evident while at the same time King gives us a new, unique and terrifying vampire story of his own. Salem’s Lot is a truly atmospheric setting adding an overall eerie and chilling vibe. The small town Maine atmosphere combined with supernatural horror creates a sense of dread that lingers long after you turn the final page.
This early published work from King already shows his ability to create complex and interesting characters that feel both real and relatable while also creating an outstanding work of fiction. Each character feels fleshed out and three-dimensional allowing us to attach ourselves to Salem’s Lot in a personal level. Not to mention that us who have grown up in Stephen King’s Maine have met people just like these in this novel…well not the vampires…
Salem’s Lot has a relentless pace with tension building steadily as we turn each page to a heart-pounding climax. King expertly weaves multiple storylines together to create a cohesive and thrilling ending.
Over the past few years many have tried to modernize and make shiny new versions of vampire stories that all seem a little fake and fluffy. None of these newer version can compare to what King accomplished with Salem’s Lot. This is a classic horror story that showcases not only a great vampire narrative but also King’s talent at crafting truly terrifying novels.
Salem’s Lot by Stephen King is truly a must-read for not only King fans but fans of horror fiction in general. King crafts a chilling tale that will keep you up at night wondering if your neighbor is really a vampire. This work is an early publication of King but gives you a real glimpse at the extremely outstanding author he is and that it is some of the finest works in the genre.
