Satan’s Swarm, written by Steve Niles with artwork from Piotr Kowalski, is the perfect spine-tingling graphic novel to cozy up to this horror season…that is unless you are a little bug squeamish…
Dr. Philip Morgan invites entomologists, young influencers, and a reporter amongst others to his secluded coastal research facility for a mysterious and bizarre study. What they find is a zoo of death, where local residents have been eaten to the bone, and the specimens they have come to understand have them on the menu next.
Steve Niles weaves a tale filled with gruesome deaths and horrifying creatures that left us with chills. Satan’s Swarm is a locked door style horror story with a unique twist that makes for the perfect horror week read. The kills are gruesome and the horror is suspenseful just what we would come to expect from Dark Horse in October. Despite the slight rushed feeling at times, the overall story is engaging and kept me infested…I mean invested…in the discovering what horrors await around the corner at Dr. Morgan’s research facility.
The standout of Satan’s Swarm is the phenomenal artwork from one of the best in the horror game Piotr Kowalski. With detailed illustrations and an atmospheric feel, Kowalski captures the dark tone of the graphic novel with precision. His use of sharp lines with intense imagery adds an extra level to the story. Each panel draws in the reader to the terrifying world of Satan’s Swarm, pairing wonderfully with Niles’ writing.
The graphic novel format is the perfect avenue to read this story. A complete horrific tale that can be devoured in one sitting or over time. Releasing at the beginning of October allows for you to enjoy, or squirm through, this story over the spooky season. Just make sure you know where the bugs in your house are at all times…
