Review Overview

Written by Richard Ashley Hamilton and brought to life with wonderful artwork by Joseph Cooper, Scoop is a young adult graphic novel that sees Sophie Cooper, a fearless high school freshman on a mission to clear her father’s name.

Richard Ashley Hamilton gives us a fun story filled with twists and turns that include supernatural elements which adding an exciting layer to the main plot of investigative journalism. Sophie’s determination to uncover the truth is inspiring, and her character development throughout the novel is both relatable and engaging.

While the script is easy to read and wonderfully crafted, the artwork from Joseph Cooper takes the cake. Cooper brings Hamilton’s story to life with great illustrations that match perfectly with Hamilton’s story. Colors from Simon Robins add to Cooper’s lines to bring the project together. Each panel enhances the overall experience of a novel geared towards younger readers. We feel immersed in Sophie’s world as she investigates and navigates through the mysteries.

Scoop is geared towards a younger audience, but adults should also enjoy this graphic novel. We can picture families reading this graphic novel just before bed with everyone getting something from its pages. The diverse representation, Sophie being a proud Cuban-American, adds depth to an already wonderful story and allows those with marginalized backgrounds to see themselves reflected in a strong and capable lead character.

Scoop is a wonderful glimpse into a young adult investigative journalism story. With great writing, beautiful artwork and authentic characters Scoop truly captivates audiences of all ages. Scoop might not be the first graphic novel on your list of books to read, but it should be added.

The Scoop Vol. 1: Breaking News original graphic novel hits bookstores everywhere on April 30, 2024 and local comic shops a day later on May 1 from the Maverick imprint at Mad Cave Studios.
