Although his on-screen time in the Star Wars prequels was limited, there is no question that Darth Maul is one of the more recognizable and iconic Star Wars villains. Now, Darth Maul gets the Black, White and Red treatment written by Benjamin Percy with artwork by Stenafo Raffaele. Darth Maul: Black, White & Red #1 features a stunning cover by none other than Alex Maleev.
Before Anakin Skywalker’s transformation into Darth Vader, there was another apprentice of Darth Sidious who walked the path of darkness – Darth Maul. A mysterious warrior hailing from Dathomir, Maul left a trail of death and destruction in his wake as he sought to fulfill his master’s bidding. In Darth Maul: Black, White & Red, we get a glimpse into Maul’s ruthless nature and his unyielding dedication to the Sith Order.
In the premiere issue of the miniseries, Maul is sent by Palpatine to investigate a prison ship – transporting a cult known as the Final Occultation – after it appears to go offline. What the Sith finds on board is truly stuff of nightmares! It’s up to him to stop this profoundly dark and unstable force that wishes to bring chaos to the galaxy.
The simplicity of using three colors to release a miniseries is nothing new, many publishers have released this format in one way or another. However, the artwork within the pages of this series is truly special. Stefano Raffaele brings Darth Maul’s menacing presence to life in each panel with a limited palette. The simplified coloring adds an eerie yet captivating feel to the story, perfectly complementing the dark themes.
Although it was well written, we found the story lacking a bit of depth compared to other Star Wars tales currently being written. However, the artwork alone can be worth reading Darth Maul: Black, White & Red. With this said we are eagerly awaiting future installments of this miniseries, as it is clear there is much more to be uncovered in Maul’s twisted journey.
Star Wars: Darth Maul – Black, White & Red is a wonderful addition to the world of Star Wars. The infamous villain has a lot to be explored and using only three colors to tell his story is a wonderful format to do so.
Star Wars: Darth Maul – Black, White & Red #1 hit comic shops on April 24, 2024 with a second issue coming May 29.
