Terrorwar #1 Manifests Fear in Debut Issue

Review Overview

Our worst fears can become more than just nightmares; they transform into terrible creatures that threaten to take our lives in Terrorwar #1 from Image Comics.

Blue City was the last livable place on Earth. Now it’s crawling with Terrors-creatures that transform into their victims’ worst fears. Humanity’s last hope? Muhammad Cho and his overworked, underpaid crew of freelance Terrorfighters. “We’re not heroes-we’re contractors.”

Eisner-winning writer Saladin Ahmed (Miles Morales) and superstar horror artist Dave Acosta (Elvira) make their Image Comics debut with this sci-fi horror series about working people fighting mind-bending monsters. Ahmed and Acosta are joined on Terrorwar by Jay Leisteno (inks), Walter Pereyra (colors), Shawn Lee (letters) and Heather Antos (edits).

Nightmares that transform into terrible creatures is scary enough, but having a small squad of fighters be the only ones to be able to destroy them adds to the horror. This cyberpunk, 80s action style comic is the perfect amount of terror and action with outstanding writing from Ahmed.

The outstanding horror illustrating ability of Acosta’s pairs well with this story. The way Dave brings to life a nightmare, which can either be laughed at or fear or both, is something that completes the comic.

The debut issue gives us enough to hook us for the long haul, while also completing a nice single issue for our consumption. Terrorwar #1 landed at local comic shops on April 19, 2023. In addition to the main cover from Acosta, Daniel Warren Johnson contributes a beautiful variant cover.
