Set in the 1700s, The Devil That Wears My Face follows Father Franco Vieri, a seasoned Vatican exorcist, on a mission to rescue a Spanish nobleman from the clutches of a sadistic demon known as Legion. However, things take a dark turn when Vieri’s own body is taken over by the demonic entity, leaving him trapped in a stranger’s body. From here on, readers follow Vieri as he tries to survive in a world where the Devil can wear anyone’s face.
Ringo Award-winning writer David Pepose and Bram Stoker Award-nominated artist Alex Cormack have put together a comic series that is both terrifying and thrilling. The story is reminiscent of the classic horror movie The Exorcist, combined with Face/Off. It has all the required elements of a supernatural thriller – a desperate exorcist, an ancient demon, and a sense of looming dread – but set within a time period and religious context that makes it unique.
The artwork is equally impressive, with Cormack’s style perfectly fitting the dark and gritty narrative. The comic book manages to convey the tension and terror that the situation demands. There are moments that truly shock and repulse, but that’s what you would expect from a supernatural thriller like this. The illustrations bring the story to life and readers can almost feel the emotions and anguish of each character.
The characters themselves are well-crafted, with believable motivations and reactions. Father Vieri’s struggles with the possession and the morality of that world feel authentic, while the demon’s brutal treatment of his victims creates a significant sense of menace.
Mad Cave Studios have a reputation for producing some really creative comic books recently, and The Devil That Wears My Face is no exception. This debut issue sets an overall tone of unease, and leaves readers wanting more. Pepose has done a wonderful job of setting up the world, the characters and the stakes, while Cormack’s artwork brings all of that to life, not to mention the outstanding letters from Justin Birch.
The Devil That Wears My Face #1 is a terrific comic that combines the classic elements of horror and suspense with a unique and intriguing premise. Pepose and Cormack work so well together to create a truly fleshed-out world where the Devil can take on any human form. The comic sets the bar high for the rest of the series, and we can’t wait to see what happens next. If you’re a fan of horror or suspense comics, then this should be on your reading list. It’s a great debut issue for what promises to be a chilling series.
