When word came out the Geiger comic book series was getting a prequel followup story, we were down to clown with Junkyard Joe #1.
The critically acclaimed team of Geoff Johns (Superman, Green Lantern), Gary Frank (Midnight Nation, Supreme Power), and Brad Anderson (Batman, Wonder Woman) teamed up once again for Junkyard Joe, hitting shelves on Wednesday, October 5.
Throughout history, unlikely and strange heroes have risen and fallen, their identities and lives a secret. But for a Great Evil to be stopped, their stories must be told. They are The Unnamed fighting The Unknown War.
From the explosive pages of Geiger comes Junkyard Joe! The world knows him as the comic strip by cartoonist Muddy Davis, but the truth stretches back to the Vietnam War. This is their story of sacrifice and brotherhood.
Now while Geiger was an amazing series, Junkyard Joe falls a bit short. Mainly due to military based story and a few small details found within the book. The reveal of Junkyard Joe was almost too easily accepted by the others in his platoon and fell a little flat for this reader.
The overall story is setting up the future of the series and with Johns, Frank, and Anderson at the helm things should turn things around. The artwork, which can get gruesome at times, was one of the big selling points of Geiger and that carried over into the prequel.
If this book was solicited to me and I had not read Geiger, I would not have picked up the first issue. Not being into military based stories would’ve kept me away.
Junkyard Joe‘s second issue with be available on November 16.
