When Cullen Bunn pairs up with Joe Bocardo things will tend to get graphic, creepy and horrifyingly visceral. Enter The Hexiles.
Jamison Kreel is dead. Six of his children from six mothers are attending the funeral of a father they never met. Each of the children possesses a different infernal power. These powers, though, come at a terrible price…a price Jamison Kreel has placed upon the heads of his offspring. And the demonic debtors have come to collect.
Cullen Bunn is known for his mastery in horror storytelling, and this continues in The Hexiles #1. From the very first page I felt immersed in the dark and twisted tale Bunn was telling. His writing is both chilling and kept me glued to each and every page with complex characters and a unique plot. Bunn is at it once again.
Joe Bocardo’s artwork adds another layer of depth to The Hexiles. The artist’s illustrations are haunting, perfecting capturing the eerie atmosphere of Bunn’s tale. Bocardo illustrates grotesque scenes with great detail exploring the dark side of things. His illustrations, along with colors from Manoli Martinez bring the world of The Hexiles to life in a way that left me once again impressed and unsettled.
The tension between siblings and their struggle to come to terms with the dark legacy left behind by their father is palpable. The complexity of each character is only beginning to unfold, but we can tell Bunn has a story to tell and these six children are in for a ride.
The debut issue of The Hexiles leaves us with a few unanswered questions. This strategic move sets the stage for future issues that promise even more twists and turns along the way. Bunn and Bocardo blend horror and suspense with supernatural elements to craft a dark tale that left us in awe and wanting more.
The Hexiles #1 is a truly atmospheric debut that delivers on its promise of Hellish familial horror. With Cullen Bunn at the helm and Joe Bocardo bringing his unique artistic vision to life on the page, this series has all the makings for one hell of a series in the horror genre. Proving once again that Mad Cave Studios is a real player in horror.
The Hexiles #1 hits local comic shops on October 30, 2024 (FOC: September 30) from Mad Cave Studios.
