Review Overview

We all may know someone who has served our military overseas, but what happens when they return plague by a mysterious and monstrous mutation years after being deemed missing in action? That is The Last Wardens by Elliot Sperl and Amit Tishler and illustrated by Rui Silveira.

With an alcoholic father and a hole in her wallet, Danielle Pryer’s life in the rustic town of Bleakwood goes from bad to worse when her long-lost brother, Bruce, returns from the Vietnam War. While Bruce is being plagued by a mysterious and monstrous mutation, he is also being hunted by an incompetent team of paranormal misfits, which leads to Bleakwood quickly becoming ground zero of a supernatural battle that forces Danielle to choose between everything she holds dear and the fate of the world as a whole.

At the heart of this story it is a supernatural monster story, but with many different layers that need to be peeled back. With Danielle already struggling to deal with life with an abusive alcoholic father and a missing brother the creative team tosses in the return of said brother possessed by a monster. You think you’re having a bad day…

What is a complex comic book, The Last Wardens sees Danielle and her father deal with family dynamics, grief, loss and trauma while also being roped into a supernatural battle. The cards are stacked against them, that is for sure. Now they fight to get Bruce back once again.

The horror and suspense are combined with supernatural elements in the debut issue. Elliot Sperl and Amit Tishler’s unique story has some chilling moments of tension while Rui Silveira brings some pretty gruesome creature designs and . The Last Wardens doesn’t waste anytime getting us immersed in the horrific battle we are about to embark on throughout this series.

The Last Wardens by Elliot Sperl and Amit Tishler (Edenfrost) and illustrated by Rui Silveira is a unique supernatural horror with a compelling storyline that has us wanting more. It has characters that we can connect with as well as mystery that has us flipping each page. With the way this debut issue ends, we are eagerly waiting to see how Danielle and her dad face the challenge set before them.
