Review Overview

The Nice House by the Lake introduced us to a group of characters who were invited to a mysterious house by a friend. Now, in the much anticipated followup, The Nice House by the Sea, we meet a whole new group of individuals with more mystery, suspense and horror.

No one who was invited to the House knew Max–but she knew each and every one of them. Masters of their fields, titans of industry and knowledge, they all represented the best and brightest of humanity. So when Max whispered to each of them the truth of what they deserved–to be saved from disaster, to carry on the flame of civilization in a paradise built just for them–they all leaped at the chance. Why not? Why shouldn’t they be the ones to live forever? Isn’t it their destiny to survive the culling of the lesser herd? Wouldn’t being named the future of humanity be…nice?

Let’s just say that The Nice House by the Lake is one of the best comic series of the past few years. Now with The Nice House by the Sea the visionary group of creators: writer James Tynion IV, artist Álvaro Martínez Bueno, and colorist Jordie Bellaire have given us a new cast of unique characters to follow in a new mysterious local.

With the Nice House saga we follow a strange mesh of characters, in the first cycle we see friends of our orchestrator coming together, while in The Nice House by the Sea we see the group that was originally intended to be out tougher. A group of the smartest and most talent people under one house as the world ends around them. The benefit of this new series is not having to explain what is happening in the outside world and just dive into our story.

Having the original gang back together helps move this story along. The absolutely wonderful illustrations from Álvaro Martínez Bueno paired with the stellar coloring by Jordie Bellaire gives a certain feel to the Nice House saga. We are back immersed in the world we loved in the first series, while a new story unfolds in a new house. This new location is a beautiful change of scenery for both Bueno and Bellaire to have their talents shine.

Tynion has a knack for the mystery, horror and suspense of it all and has said that we can expect the unexpected in The Nice House by the Sea and following the first issue we are in for a journey to uncover what lies ahead. Tynion continues to show is amazing ability to write this series with unique characters and a complex story that has us guessing.

The Nice House by the Sea is as good as a followup to the first cycle as we could’ve expected. The new location breathes life into the story while keeping a bit of the feel of The Nice House by the Lake. The creative team has once again nailed the look, feel and vibe of the series. The Nice House by the Sea is compelling, stunning and a truly immersive reading experience.

The Nice House by the Sea #1 hit local comic shops on July 24, 2024 from DC Black Label.
