Rachel Harrison is an outstanding voice in the horror genre, even in small doses such as the Audible Original The Veil short story.
Sally has recently left an unfulfilling job to volunteer at a living history museum, where she is assigned to the Death House. Every day, she dons Victorian mourning garb and describes traditional funeral services to tourists. It sounds depressing as hell, but for Sally, it’s less depressing than her tepid marriage to her childhood sweetheart.
This becomes all too clear when she accidentally travels through time and space to a liminal world where the ghosts of the living history museum haunt its grounds. There, she meets and falls hard for Victorian-era pretty boy Nathaniel. Their heady, romantic encounters douse Sally in the sad reality that her marriage is anything but and leave her tempted to join Nathaniel permanently in his realm.
The Veil is a wonderfully crafted, empowering horror story that wastes no time with its chilling and creepy vibes. While I’d happily read a longer version of this tale, Rachel Harrison gives us a tightly packed story in a short span that left a lasting impact.
Blending horror with romance and lighter moments of humor, The Veil is a uniquely unsettling read. Harrison beautiful crafts well developed characters even with the brief length. You really can’t help but be drawn into Sally’s word, feeling every decision she has to make and rooting for her along the way. While those choices may be both expected and surprising, they steer the story toward an ending that is nothing short of amazing.
Rachel Harrison gives us a unique, creepy and empowering horror story. Just when you think you’ve predicted the path, Harrison shifts directions, delivering a twisty story to keep you on your toes. The Veil stands out as a fantastic horror story worth every one of its 45 short minutes. Not to mention the fantastic narration by Louisa Krause.
The Veil is an Audible original which is available on Amazon.
