The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are finding their way back into the world of video games, but this time a little differently in the form of the New York Times bestselling graphic novel TMNT: The Last Ronin.
The five-issue miniseries, which was released in graphic novel format in 2022, will be adapted into video game format according to Polygon. The game will be a bit more gritty, dark and mature than the typical TMNT video games of the past which were more colorful and kid-friendly. This of course matches perfectly with the comic book by Kevin Eastman, Peter Laird and Tom Waltz.
This news comes from Doug Rosen, senior vice president for games and emerging media at Paramount Global, the company which owns the rights to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The TMNT: The Last Ronin video game will be inspired by big action role-play games (RPG) like the God of War games.
In the graphic novel we find out who is the Last Ronin? In a future, battle-ravaged New York City, a lone surviving Turtle embarks on a seemingly hopeless mission seeking justice for the family he lost.
What terrible events destroyed his family and left New York a crumbling, post-apocalyptic nightmare? All will be revealed in this climactic Turtle tale that sees longtime friends becoming enemies and new allies emerging in the most unexpected places. Can the surviving Turtle triumph?
The Last Ronin is from the minds of legendary TMNT co-creators Eastman and Laird along with Waltz. The series features artwork from Eastman, Esau Escorza, Issac Escorza, Ben Bishop, with colors from Luis Antonio Delgado and lettering from Shawn Lee.
The video game adaptation is being developed by an unnamed studio and we will have to wait a bit as the game is likely a few years off according to Rosen. This can only be the first further media adaptation of the The Last Ronin we can expect as we can only imagine movies, televisions series and more from the series.
