Review Overview

The holiday season is all about warmth, love, and spending time with loved ones. But what if your holiday plans took a dark turn? That’s exactly what happens in Candy Cain Kills by Brian McAuley.

The book follows Austin, his parents, and his younger sister Fiona, as they head to a remote cottage for Christmas. The reluctant bonding exercise turns into a fight for their lives when they learn that their holiday destination was the site of a heinous crime. Candy Cain, a legendary killer, is back and is out for blood. As they try to survive the attack of the vicious killer, Austin and his family must also learn to come together as a family in the face of such danger.

Candy Cain KillsThe plot of this book is certainly not unique, and it’s easy to predict who will die and when. But that’s exactly what makes it so enjoyable. It’s a classic slasher, but at Christmas. If you’re a fan of campy horror flicks or books, then you’ll love this easy read. It’s perfect for a cozy night in with some snacks and a warm blanket.

One thing that stands out in this book is the character of Candy Cain. The killer is extremely unhinged and twisted in all the best ways possible. The gore is abundant, and the kills are creative, making for an extremely entertaining read. The book also has a touch of humor, which adds to the overall fun vibe of the novel.

McAuley’s writing style is simple and straightforward. The descriptions are minimal, and the book is very dialogue-heavy. This makes for a fast-paced and engaging read. I finished the book in one sitting because I just couldn’t put it down. The book also has a nostalgic vibe, reading like a 90s horror flick.

Candy Cain Kills is a blood-soaked, entertaining read that will transport you to the world of campy horror. If you’re a fan of slasher movies or just looking for a fun, easy, and quick read, then I would definitely recommend this book. It’s the perfect book to cozy up with on a cold winter night. Just make sure to keep the lights on!

Candy Cain Kills is available at bookstores everywhere from Shortwave Publishing! Candy Cain Kills is the second book in the series of standalone Killer VHS books. Be sure to also check out the Alex Ebenstein‘s Melon Head Mayhem.
