Matthew Rosenberg weaves together espionage, science fiction, and family drama with the finesse in We’re Taking Everyone Down With Us along with artist Stefano Landini. The explosive double-sized first issue sets the stage for an epic tale of revenge and self-discovery.
After her mad-scientist father is killed by the world’s greatest spy, 13-year-old Annalise is left all alone in the world. Sort of. Her dead dad’s robot bodyguard is following her around for some reason. Now Annalise has a choice: try to lead a normal life for the first time ever…or seek revenge and maybe overthrow the world order in the process.
The debut issue of We’re Taking Everyone Down With Us feels reminiscent of Silver Age sci-fi adventures but with an unmistakable modern twist. Rosenberg and Landini talents shine through as they craft a universe where technology and emotion collide. At its core is Annalise, whose life takes an unexpected turn after her father’s death—a man whose legacy is shrouded in scientific brilliance and moral ambiguity. Her father’s robot bodyguard adds layers to her quest for normalcy or vengeance which has a dynamic that brings forth questions about loyalty and purpose.
Like What’s The Furthest Place From Here?, where Rosenberg is paired with a talented artist (Tyler Boss) who elevates the story to another level with their illustrations, We’re Taking Everyone Down With Us is taken to new heights with the lines of Landini. Stefano’s illustrations brings the duo’s vision to life with a unique style that fits the story like a glove. Not to mention the stellar colors by Roman Titov and letters from Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou. The synergy between text and visuals enhances immersion into Annalise’s world.
The blending of genre’s in We’re Taking Everyone Down With Us is seamless throughout. Rosenberg blends genres like spy thriller, action and sci-fi adventure with elements of revenge, intrigue, and family drama to craft a story that has you flipping to the next page with gusto. The blend of themes is encapsulated wonderfully for effortlessly engaging storytelling.
