Review Overview

Welcome to the post-apocalyptic world where billionaire Harvard Denny and Smile, Inc. have taken over everything, and everything runs on atomic energy. It’s a lawless and dangerous world, but amidst all this chaos, there’s a man who goes by the name of The Man from Maybe.

Written by Jordan Thomas (Weird Work, XINO), The Man from Maybe #1 is a 48-page, double-sized debut that whisks you away to an upside-down world where mutants reign and atomic contraband is the most valuable thing in existence. The protagonist, The Man from Maybe, is a masked bandit who knows no name, no home, no surrender- only the whispered requests of those in need. He’s a gunslinging hero in a world ruled by Smile, Inc., the corporation that pillages the remnants of the past and present to build a better future.

The comic book features incredible artwork that works well with the story without overpowering it. Shaky Kane‘s art style is simple but effective and manages to convey the comic’s gritty, post-apocalyptic nature perfectly. The Man from Maybe sports a classic western-inspired look that’ll captivate fans of the genre, and the environment he inhabits is filled with fantastic and creative details.

The plot and pacing of The Man from Maybe #1 are structured like a classic Western, complete with outlaws, shootouts, and a quest for treasure. The story keeps moving at a fast and furious pace without sacrificing character development or dialogue. Some of the exchanges between characters are genuinely funny and will have readers chuckling.

The Man from Maybe‘s postmodern approach to storytelling and genre-bending is sure to hook readers who are looking for something new and exciting. The debut issue hits local comic shops on October 18, 2023 from Oni Press.
