Jumanji is a story that capture generations of people, but did you know there was a sequel to the classic book–which was also made into a film–Zathura by Chris Van Allsburg. Released just over 20 years following Jumanji, Zathura captures our imagination in space.
In a story that picks up where Jumanji leaves off, older brother Walter warns his pesky little brother, Danny, not to bring home a mysterious board game they find at the park. But when Danny’s curiosity gets the better of him, the brothers have to battle homicidal robots, Zyborg pirates, and giant meteors in their living room! Will the feuding brothers learn to work together before it’s too late?
Chris Van Allsburg’s Zathura presents a continuation of the 1981 classic Jumanji, but this time on an intergalactic journey. In Zathura, we are reintroduced to the magical board game, but after discovering another playing board below the original the game transports us to new places accompanied by Van Allsburg’s incredible illustrations.
Some may not even know that Zathura was a sequel to Jumanji or that a film was adapted by director Jon Favreau (yes…Iron Man, Elf, The Lion King, Jungle Book director). However, you should. Zathura is a fun, intergalactic version of Jumanji where the game comes with consequences. While not nearly as popular as the first in the series, Zathura has the trademark Van Allsburg writing and illustration we have come to expect. Like Jumanji, I feel the sequel is better as a film adaptation than the original children’s book. This is solely due to the expanded length given to the film and the adaptation being made for a wider age range and audience.
Zathura is another children’s book featuring Van Allsburg’s signature pencil style. His full-spread illustrations capture the essence of the story being told with each page inviting you deeper into the story where danger can lurk around any corner. These stunning visuals complement his narrative perfectly by enhancing both dramatic action sequences as well as quieter reflective moments shared between brothers.
Zathura is another in the long list of outstanding books written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg which include our favorites The Polar Express and Jumanji. His mastery of crafting children’s tales with captivating stories paired with breathtaking illustrations is appealing to both children and adults across generations.
Zathura is available at bookstores everywhere. The audiobook, narrated by an ensemble cast, is available at Libro.fm!
