When you find a series that you really love, all you can do is hope there is more to come, but also hope that they don’t tarnish what you fell in love with. Tyler Boss and Dylan Burnett examine the story behind Rascal Randy, New Jersey’s killer in Exquisite Corpses, in an atmospheric and unsettling prequel that tells us more about the bunny and how he became the killer we for some reason cheer on.
The sleepy little town of Aurora Springs, NY, has exactly one claim to fame: it’s the birthplace of Rascal Randy. Not the man in the suit — the man has never mattered. He was no one until he put the mascot head on for the first time, until he felt the life leave someone’s body through the thickly furred gloves of the suit.
No, Aurora Springs is the birthplace of Rascal Randy the rabbit, who, once upon a time, was poised to become the greatest animated character this country had ever seen — until greed and tragedy changed his trajectory forever.
Not only do we get more from the world of Exquisite Corpses, but it’s in the form of one of my favorite characters from the first season. Rascal Randy, one of the more iconic characters from the series, has this creepy-yet-cuddly vibe going on that forces me to know more about their history. Now, Boss crafts a story that dives deep into the lore of the character, heading back a number of years to kick-it-off. Even though some prequels can feel like a way to squeeze more cash out of the golden calf, but this spin-off equals the form set by the main series.
Prequels are always tough stories to tell, as you want to give more on the background of select characters, in this case Rascal Randy, but also allow new readers to be able to follow along. Boss has created a tale that needs no prior knowledge to read and allows us as the reader to choose between diving into Rascal Randy and get to know the character prior to reading the main series, or read Exquisite Corpses and dive into the prequel to get more context and information.
Luckily, Exquisite Corpses: Rascal Randy explores more than just the history of the killer themselves, but also dives into the history of the character on the outside. The iconic bunny costume derives from a deeper history and Boss begins the journey in this premiere issue. We fell in love with the character and killer in Exquisite Corpses, now Boss tells us why.
The story is creepy and truly atmospheric. There is the unsettling vibe throughout that I couldn’t put my finger on, but just added to the over reading experience. Being the first issue in the series, not much is revealed (great cliffhanger ending), but lays the foundation for the rest of the series.
As with the main series, Rascal Randy features the vision of another talented artist putting pen to page. Burnett’s illustrations bring the creep factor to another level with some gritty style and dark vibes. It’s a style that fits the character and the world crafted before it. The artwork works so well with Boss’ storytelling for a complete package.
If you finished Exquisite Corpses Season 1 wanting more from Rascal Randy, this new series is exactly what you had hope for. Tyler Boss expands on the history of the character without taking away some of the mystery in the main series. Boss delivers a creepy, atmospheric story that stands confidently on its own while adding to the lore Exquisite Corpses. Exquisite Corpses: Rascal Randy is one of those rare prequels that doesn’t just justify its existence, it makes an already iconic character even more fascinating.
Exquisite Corpses: Rascal Randy #1 hits local comic shops on July 8, 2026 from Image Comics.
