Each comic series on this list either started recently or started/about to start a new volume of the series. We understand there are a ton of amazing independent comics, these are just a few.
Out list of independent comics to read is in no particular order.
Crashing
Crashing has the chance of being one Capes and Tights top independent comics of the year. Created by writer Matthew Klein and artist Morgan Beem, Crashing has two issues currently out on IDW Publishing with a third coming November 16, 2022.
Rose Osler is a specialist. Her focus? Patients with Powers… at a hospital with a No Powered Patients policy. When a battle between Boston’s protectors and destroyers erupts, Rose is trapped between saving the city’s beloved hero by day and greatest villain at night. Except Rose could become a casualty when she’s forced to risk her recovery. As Rose pushes past her limits to save everyone else, will she be able to save herself?
Klein and Beem will be featured on Episode 68 of the Capes and Tights Podcast dropping November 23, 2022.
The Approach
Boom! Studios’ The Approach co-written by Jeremy Haun and Jason A. Hurley with art from Jesus Hervas dropped on October 12, 2022 with a second issue coming November 30.
When airport employees Mac and Abigail find themselves snowed in after a blizzard, they witness a terrible plane crash.
After pulling a survivor from the wreckage, they realize a terrifying truth: this plane has been missing for 27 years!
The nightmare has only just begun though, as the people trapped in the airport soon find themselves confronted by what this plane actually brought back…For those with a fear of flying…it’s not the sky that deserves dread, but what lies beyond it…

The ’06 Protocol
The ’06 Protocol is another one of the independent comics with only one or two issues out that has huge potential of a great series run. The book written by Lee Turner with art from Cliff Richards debuted on September 13, 2022 with a second issue coming on November 23, 2022 from Aftershock Comics.
The seemingly perfect life of the Mirino family is shattered when family patriarch, Faust, is brutally murdered on a quiet summer night. His wife, Cat, and 16-year-old daughter, Missy, are forced to confront a shocking truth about Faust’s involvement in a secret government program known as The ’06 Protocol.
Now, Cat and Missy have to protect each other as they are hunted, and haunted, by the people and secrets of Faust’s double life.
Grim
One of the year’s best independent comics is the horror series, Grim from Boom! Studios. Written by Stephanie Phillips with art from Flaviano comes a vision of what comes after, and the nature of death itself! Grim has five issues available with a sixth issue coming December 14, 2022. This new horror series is one of the independent comics we can’t wait to read each month.
Jessica Harrow is dead. But her journey has only just begun!
Discover the world of the afterlife, where Jessica has been recruited as a Reaper, tasked with ferrying countless souls to their final destination.
But unlike the rest of the Reapers, she has no memory of what killed her and put her into this predicament.
In order to unravel the mystery of her own demise, she’ll have to solve an even bigger one – where is the actual Grim Reaper?
Eight Billion Genies
Eight Billion Genies had so much traction around its debut that the series has been optioned by Amazon for a number of projects. The new series from Curse Words‘ co-creators Charles Soule and Ryan Browne is one of independent comics smash-hits of 2022. The eight-issue series has had multiple printings of its first few books and is dropping its sixth issue on November 23, 2022.
If you had one wish…what would you wish for? Now, what if everyone else had one wish too? That’s Eight Billion Genies.
At exactly the same moment, everyone on earth gets a genie and one wish. All hell breaks loose, in a very entertaining way…and that’s just the beginning. Buckle in for the wildest ride of the year!
The series wraps up in 2023, but will go down as a favorite of the independent comics of 2022.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin
One of the best, if not the best, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stories in history. A story turtles co-creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird have been waiting to tell for many years. Plus, good friend of Capes and Tights, Ben Bishop, is a series artist on the five-issue miniseries.
In a future NYC far different than the one we know today, a lone surviving Turtle goes on a seemingly hopeless mission to obtain justice for his fallen family and friends.
Kinetic layouts from Eastman, inks from The Escorza Brothers and Bishop and a thrilling script full of surprises from longtime TMNT scribe Tom Waltz all combine to make this one of the most memorable TMNT stories you will ever read!
The Last Ronin returns for another miniseries, The Last Ronin: The Lost Years, dropping January 2023.
Dead Mall
Dead Mall debuted on October 26, 2022 from critically acclaimed horror author Adam Cesare (Clown in the Cornfield) and artist David Stoll. Dead Mall brings old mall vibes and stellar artwork to the world of independent comics.
The Penn Mills Galleria is about to be demolished. Five teens sneak into the mall to take a last look around before it’s gone. However, while Penn Mills has been closed for years, the mall is far from abandoned. A night of exploration becomes a shopping spree from hell. The teens must contend with the sprawling, transformative cosmic horror of Penn Mills or be trapped forever within the Dead Mall.
Issue two arrives November 30 with a third issue coming in January 2023.
Golden Rage
One of the most obscure and odd independent comics of the past 12 months is Golden Rage by writer Chrissy Williams and artist Lauren Knight. The entire creative team of this miniseries is comprised of women.
In a world where older women who’ve been deemed useless to society are abandoned on an island, Golden Rage documents their golden years of making friends, baking dessert, and fighting to the death.
Golden Rage wraps up their five-issue series on December 7, 2022.

Year Zero
If the world of the undead independent comics is more your style, Year Zero picked up with a prequel series by New York Times bestselling author Daniel Kraus (The Living Dead, The Shape of Water) and artist Goran Sudzuka. Year Zero, Vol. 0 takes place prior to Benjamin Percy‘s Vol. 1 and Vol. 2.
In this action-packed prelude to the hit series, Kraus unveils four globe-spanning tales from the earliest days of the zombie apocalypse when even the wildest rumors couldn’t measure up to the horror to come. Kraus is scheduled to appear on the Capes and Tights Podcast for Episode 75 in early 2023.
Dead Seas
Dead Seas is a unique take on a ghostly adventure. Written by New York Times bestselling author Cavan Scott (Star Wars) and illustrated by Nick Brokenshire, Dead Seas makes it’s independent comics debut on December 7, 2022.
Ghosts are real and dangerous. But they’re also valuable, their ectoplasm capable of curing countless diseases. There’s only one problem: harvesting the wonder drug can be just as deadly. Prisoner Gus Ortiz is willing to take the risk in return for a reduced sentence-anything to see his daughter again.
