Writer David M. Booher and artist Chris Shehan join the Capes and Tights Podcast for Episode 122 on August 16, 2023. To prepare for the conversation, we have compiled seven comics by Booher and Shehan you should read right now.

Chris Shehan is an American comic book artist living in Austin, Texas, best known for his work in the American comic book market with multiple publishers, working on interior art, cover art and concept art. Shehan has worked on books for BOOM! Studios, Black Mask Studios, Scout Comics, Vault Comics, Titan Books, Penguin Random House and AfterLight Comics, and more!

David M. Booher is an Eisner-nominated and GLAAD-nominated writer with works at Dark Horse, Image Comics, IDW Publishing, Vault Comics, and BOOM! Studios. His all-ages fantasy series Canto is now in development as a feature film with Will Smith’s Westbrook Studios. His LGBTQ-led Killer Queens was featured in the New York Times as a must-read in honor of Pride Month.

House of Slaughter (BOOM! Studios) // Chris Shehan

Tate Brombal | Isaac Goodhart | Chris Shehan | House of Slaughter

Discover the inner workings of the House of Slaughter in this new horror series exploring the secret history of the Order that forged Erica Slaughter into the monster hunter she is today.

You know Aaron Slaughter as Erica’s handler and rival. But before he donned the black mask, Aaron was a teenager training within the House of Slaughter.

Surviving within the school is tough enough, but it gets even more complicated when Aaron falls for a mysterious boy destined to be his competition.

Dive deeper into the world of Something is Killing the Children in this first story arc by co-creator James Tynion IV (The Department of Truth, The Nice House on the Lake) and co-writer Tate Brombal (Barbalien, The Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos), with art by rising star Chris Shehan and co-creator Werther Dell’Edera (Razorblades).

House of Slaughter is available in both trade paperback and digital formats.

Canto (IDW Publishing) // David M. Booher

Optioned: Canto | David M. Booher

Canto’s adventure begins! Enslaved for generations, Canto’s people once had hearts. Now they have clocks. When slavers damage a little tin girl’s clock beyond repair, Canto must brave his strange and fantastic world to bring back her heart. Can he overcome the dangers that await to save the one he loves?

You can read Canto via trade paperback or digitally.

The Autumnal (Vault Comics) // Chris Shehan

The Autumnal

Following the death of her estranged mother, Kat Somerville and her daughter Sybil flee a difficult life in Chicago for the quaint-and possibly deadly-town of Comfort Notch, New Hampshire. From NY Times best-selling author, Daniel Kraus (The Shape of Water, Trollhunters, The Living Dead), and rising star Chris Shehan, comes a haunting vision of America’s prettiest autumn.

The Autumnal is available in collected trade paperback or digitally on ComiXology.

Killer Queens (Dark Horse) // David M. Booher

Killer Queens

Meet Max and Alex. Reformed intergalactic assassins for hire. On the run. Also super gay. Their former boss-a fluffy monkey with a jetpack-is hot on their tail to take back his stolen ship. They gotta eat, so they take a mission from Alex’s old flame. Your standard no-kill, casualty-free kidnapping recovery from a nearby moon. Only complication? Half the moon is ruled by a fascist dictator hostile to foreigners. They’re the Killer Queens, so what could possibly go wrong?

Join rising star David M. Booher and an all-LGBTQ creative team as they tackle issues of love, xenophobia, and the terror of fascist dictatorships in this hilarious sci-fi epic.

Read Killer Queens via digital or trade paperback. Killer Queens 2 #1 hit shelves on August 9, 2023.

Nightfall (Vault Comics) // Chris Shehan

Nightfall Double Feature #2

Grab your popcorn and clamber into your sleeping bag for two tales of terror from the creative teams of The Autumnal, The Plot, and Resonant!

A family’s cross country roadtrip goes off the map and into the unforgiving wilds of Joshua Tree National Park, when mom and wife-to-be Helene succumbs to a malevolent force tucked inside an abandoned camping trailer.”

Rain (Image Comics) // David M. Booher

Rain | Eisner Awards | David M. Booher

On a seemingly normal August day in Boulder, Colorado, the skies are clear, and Honeysuckle Speck couldn’t be happier. She’s finally moving in with her girlfriend Yolanda. But their world is literally torn apart when dark clouds roll in and release a downpour of nails-splinters of bright crystal that shred the skin of anyone not safely under cover. RAIN makes vivid this escalating apocalyptic event, as the deluge of nails spreads across the country and around the world, threatening everything young lovers Honeysuckle and Yolanda hold dear.

Rain can be read via digital or hardcover.

Specs (BOOM! Studios)

Specs TP | Chris Shehan | David M. Booher

Small town. Ohio, 1986. All Kenny and Ted want is to not feel like outcasts. What happens when a pair of X-ray glasses mysteriously appear? The magic specs open a world of possibilities for these misfit teens through the granting of literal wishes!

Things start out innocent, but when they wish that their bully would disappear, things take a cursed turn, with far darker consequences than they thought possible…

The trade paperback hits local comic shops on August 16, 2023 and can be read digitally.
