The Civil War story arc is one of my favorite Marvel Comics’ arcs, so naturally reading Stuart Moore‘s prose was a must-read. In Moore’s adaptation the epic conflict between Iron Man and Captain America is rendered anew.
Iron Man and Captain America: two core members of the Avengers, the world’s greatest super hero team. When a tragic battle blows a hole in the city of Stamford, killing hundreds of people, the U.S. government demands that all super heroes unmask and register their powers. To Tony Stark–Iron Man–it’s a regrettable but necessary step. To Captain America, it’s an unbearable assault on civil liberties.
Originally penned by Mark Millar and penciled by Steve McNiven, Civil War has always provoked deep thought and elicited a strong emotional responses from me with its bold exploration of power, responsibility, and freedom. The original single issue comic series truly was one of those comics I eagerly awaited for each month at my local comic shops, something few story arcs from Marvel has been able to accomplish in recent years. What Stuart Moore does for this story arc is introduce those not familiar with the graphic novel a chance to experience the gripping saga from an alternate perspective.
Although McNiven’s artwork is partly what made me fall in love with the comic series, Moore skillfully portrays each and every character and scene vividly allowing me to enjoy each and every moment over again as it was brand new. Moreover, what sets this prose novel apart from its comic book counterpart is how it caters specifically to an audience more accustomed to text than visuals–and Moore does it well.
Moore’s adaptation of Civil War shines as both homage and innovation—paying respect to Millar’s and McNiven’s original vision while offering new perspectives for avid readers seeking something different from their beloved stories. This prose novel gives those outside comic book fandom a chance to experience the Civil War story arc without having to open a comic–while I highly recommend reading the comic series.
