For those who grew up watching the animated series, ThunderCats, the release of a new comic series is sure to stir up some excitement. The ThunderCats are back in action, and this time they’re facing even more challenges than before. Written by Declan Shalvey with artwork from Drew Moss, the first issue sets the stage for an epic adventure that will take fans on a trip down memory lane.
The story begins with the ThunderCats fleeing their home world, which is on the brink of destruction. Their journey is interrupted by an attack from their mortal enemies, the Mutants of Plun-Darr. They crash land on Third Earth, where they must rebuild their society while also defending themselves from their enemies who are determined to possess their mystical gem, the Eye of Thundera.
One of the highlights of this comic book is Lion-O’s growth as a leader. He takes charge despite his lack of experience and displays a willingness to do whatever it takes to protect his people. Fans will enjoy seeing Lion-O step up and become the hero he was always meant to be.
The artwork in this comic book stays true to the original content while also adding some modern flair. Drew Moss does an excellent job bringing each character to life with vibrant illustrations that capture their unique personalities. The action scenes are particularly impressive and will keep readers engaged throughout.
While there are plenty of nods to the original series that fans will appreciate, this comic book also introduces some new elements that add depth and complexity to the story. Mumm-Ra the Ever-Living, the devil-priest of Third Earth, creates a formidable opponent for our heroes to face off against.
The one drawback is the debut issue felt like it was being rushed along to get to the final few pages and setup the rest of the series. Outside of that it was a wonderful debut.
Overall, ThunderCats #1 is a fun and exciting read that captures the spirit of the original series while also carving out its own path. The artwork is impressive, and the story sets the stage for an epic adventure that promises to keep fans engaged from start to finish. Whether you’re a longtime fan or someone who’s just discovering the ThunderCats for the first time, this series is worth checking out.
ThunderCats #1 hit local comic shops on February 7, 2024 from Dynamite Entertainment.
