I wasn’t aware of a lot of people, including myself, who were clamoring for a series based around Agatha Harkness, but was pleasantly surprised at the conclusion of Agatha All Along. A series filled with witchcraft, emotion, music and best of all twists.
After being trapped in the town of Westview, New Jersey at the end of WandaVision, the witch Agatha Harkness escapes with the help of a goth teen who wishes to face the trials of the legendary Witches’ Road. Without her magical powers, Agatha and the teen form a new coven of witches with which to face the trials.
Agatha All Along almost feels like a second season of WandaVision or at least a sequel to the outstanding Disney+ Marvel Cinematic Universe debut series, but also has its own identity at the same time. Agatha All Along was truly perfect for the spooky season as a series that could be re-watched by the younger generation each Halloween as I watch Hocus Pocus.
The creative team, lead by Jac Schaeffer, wonderfully crafts a visually appealing series that transports us into a mystical realm brimming with wonder. Every setting serves not only as mere backdrops but also as integral elements to enhance the storytelling. The attention to detail contributed to establishing atmospheric tension in each episode, truly immersing us in the mythical world.
What stood out the most over the eight-episode season was the exceptional talent embodied by Kathryn Hahn as well as Aubrey Plaza. Their chemistry during each scene together was palpable. While the remaining cast was worth watching, these two stole the show as we could expected. Hahn seamlessly transitioned between comedic timing and moments of more serious emotion while Plaza infused her character with equal parts whimsical darkness and humor. A truly talented one-two punch.
One would be amiss without mentioning music accompanying every twist and turn from a haunting score from Christophe Beck to more catchy spooky tunes as The Ballad of the Witches’ Road by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez. The music adds depth the series and lives with us long after the final episode. Just TRY and get The Ballad of Witches’ Road out of your head…just try.
While the series conclusion felt like most MCU series—setting us up for the next thing—it was a fitting close to the debut season.
Despite my initial skepticism about its potential impact, Agatha All Along triumphs through eerie settings, fantastic music and stellar performances by Hahn and Plaza, leaving me enchanted long after the credits roll. The creative team delivered just what the doctor ordered for the spooky season.
