Review Overview

Masterpiece is a fantastically created by an outstanding team. Written by Brian Michael Bendis (Secret Invasion, The Ones), artwork from Alex Maleev, colors by Ian Herring and letters from Joshua Reed, it’s no surprise that the comic book is a masterpiece in itself. The story begins with Emma, an extraordinary 16-year-old who discovers that she is the only daughter of two of the greatest master criminals of all-time.

Bendis has crafted an intriguing story with a unique twist. The idea of a criminal family is not new, but the writer has managed to infuse it with a fresh perspective. Emma is a relatable character, as she navigates her newfound identity while dealing with a greedy billionaire who threatens her loved ones. The story is easy to follow, and the pacing is just right. It’s a perfect balance of action, drama, and humor.

The artwork by Alex Maleev is stunning. The colors by Ian Herring are wonderful and complement the story. The lettering by Joshua Reed adds to the overall experience. One of the standout elements of the comic book is the use of expression and body language by the characters. The way Emma and her crew interact with each other is believable, and the art captures the emotions perfectly.

The supporting cast is well developed, and the crew that Emma assembles for the heist is diverse and interesting. The crew includes her peers and her parents’ old associates. The heist itself is grand and impossible, providing the reader with a thrilling ride. The pace of the story is just right, leading to a satisfying conclusion.

Masterpiece is a well-crafted story with an exceptional creative team. The characters are relatable, the heist is grand and impossible, and the art is breathtaking. Bendis has outdone himself yet again, and we cannot wait to see where Emma’s journey takes us in the future issues.

Masterpiece #1 hits local comic shops on December 13, 2023 from Dark Horse. Bendis and Maleev dropped by the Capes and Tights Podcast on December 6 to discuss Masterpiece and so much more! Be sure to subscribe!
