Review Overview

Travel through time in Marvel Comics’ trade paperback Thanos Wins by writer Donny Cates (Venom, Crossover, God Country) and artist Geoff Shaw (God Country, Guardians of the Galaxy). Thanos Wins collects Thanos #13-18 and Thanos Annual #1 released in 2018.

Ask the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe how they fear the universe will end, and in their most honest moment, they will answer with two words: “Thanos wins.” And now, it looks as though that disturbing thought is about to become a horrific reality! See what happens when the Mad Titan gets his way! Will he cause the cosmos to spiral downward into chaos and death…or will something very different happen? As Thanos journeys to the end of time and his moment of complete victory, he still won’t be happy with what he sees!

Witness the Mad Titan’s greatest glory – and ultimate shame! And no matter what form Thanos’ victory takes, is there any way that anyone – or anything – can possibly survive?

Thanos holds a special place in our heart since before he was officially introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a post-credit scene in the 2012’s The Avengers. The love grew when George Perez personally illustrated a sketch of the Mad Titan at the NorthEast Comic and Collectibles Extravaganza in 2015. So when Paul Eaton of Galactic Comics and Collectibles opted to read the 2018 trade, we were on board.

Eaton had a rough time choosing a Marvel story to read that didn’t need thousands of books to read prior to understand the story and he landed on Thanos Wins. Now, the book club this month, which was slimmed down due to the holidays, had mixed reviews of the book. A few liked and enjoyed reading about Thanos, while a smaller number could take or leave it. That is something that comes often to us with Cates writing Marvel Comics.

The series was incredible illustrated by Shaw and the story was well worth reading, but won’t really convert a non-Marvel fan over to the right side of the fence. Thanos Wins deals with time travel, death, and so much more and is available wherever trades are sold. Check with your local comic shop.

The month of January 2023’s book is Something is Killing the Children, Vol. 1 from James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edra at BOOM! Studios. Grab your copy and follow along!
