Review Overview

The City Beneath Her Feet is a fresh, vibrant and violent new comic penned by Eisner-winning writer James Tynion IV and brought to vivid life by artist Elsa Charretier and colorist Jordie Bellaire. The debut issue is full of action and visually captivating from some of the best in comics.

Jasper Jayne was the girl of Zara’s dreams, but their brief relationship came and went in such an intense blaze that Zara was left thinking Jasper was just that… a dream. Years later, Zara is thrust back into Jasper’s world — unknowingly listed as her emergency contact, Zara must piece together the mystery of Jasper’s life, all while being hunted by the assassins who once called Jasper one of their own.

James Tynion IV crafts a tale that follows characters whose lives intertwine with the rhythm akin to New York City’s own heartbeat—a city that serves as both backdrop and character in its own right. Tynion’s story explores how people we meet can change us forever; how our perceptions can be turned on their head when we truly see someone for who they are. Through the engaging storyline and action-packed sequences, The City Beneath Her Feet quickly became more than just another comic but an experience.

While Tynion’s script is full of energy and engaging, the true stars of The City Beneath Her Feet are Charretier and Bellaire. Their combined efforts result in pages that burst with color, motion, and emotion, creating scenes that feel alive beyond their two-dimensional confines. Charretier’s artwork differs from other popular Tynion comics which is a refreshing sight. Each panel is infused with kinetic engird that pulls us through the story, while the colors by Bellaire pop off each page creating a synergy between these creators that is executed flawlessly.

I would be remised if I didn’t mention the fantastic lettering by Aditya Bidikar which complements the visuals seamlessly. As well as, the design esthetic from Dylan Todd the ensures cohesive storytelling throughout. Together these creators have forged something special; something wholly unique—which has become commonplace at DSTLRY.

Tynion and the rest of the creative team have seemed to craft a story with adrenaline-pumping sequences interspersed with moments of genuine tenderness and a blitz of color. The pairing of Tynion with Charretier is one for the ages and we all benefit from this duo with this debut issue.

The City Beneath Her Feet by James Tynion IV, Elsa Charretier, Jordie Bellaire and Aditya Bidikar is a testament to what happens when talented individuals come together under shared vision to craft a story. This debut issue stands out at a publisher where comics continue to standout and promises for more in future issues.

The City Beneath Her Feet #1 hits local comic shops on December 11, 2024 from DSTLRY.
