Review Overview

It’s Christmas in July with Death Comes for the Toymaker #1, an unforgettable holiday tale from writer Dakota Brown and artist Ryan Cody at Scout Comics.

In this first installment, we meet Gil the Toymaker, who is forced to do the work of Death himself and carry a list of ready-to-harvest souls alongside his naughty and nice list. As he reflects on his relationship with Death for several millennia, a scheme is revealed that may just put an end to Death’s contract and perhaps, Death himself.

The holiday season is often associated with joy and happiness, with Santa Claus being the ultimate symbol of love and giving. However, Death Comes for the Toymaker explores a different aspect of the holiday season, making it unpredictable and exciting.

Moreover, the artwork by Ryan Cody adds to the overall atmosphere of the story, leaving you absorbed in the world of the Toymaker and Death. The colors used set just the right tone for a grim tale, with the character designs being visually stunning and unique.

Another aspect that we loved about Death Comes for the Toymaker is the lettering by Micah Myers. The lettering is not just functional in helping readers navigate through the story, but also adds to the overall mood of the narrative, often building to key moments of tension. Myers is one of the best in the business.

Death Comes for the Toymaker keeps you hooked from start to finish. The plot is well-thought-out, with just the right dose of suspense and surprise, keeping you on your toes throughout. One of the most impressive things about this series is how it blends elements of fantasy, horror, and drama, resulting in a unique and unforgettable blend.

Finally, the cover art by Joe Bocardo deserves a special mention. The cover perfectly captures the essence of the series, with the tones and textures adding depth and dimension to the illustration. We love Bocardo’s work!

Death Comes for the Toymaker #1 hits local comic shops on July 5, 2023 from Scout Comics. The trade paperback collecting all six issues hits shelves in March 2024.

Writer Dakota Brown joins the Capes and Tights Podcast for Episode 139 on November 22, 2023!
